Daily Backup
To peform the daily backup follow these steps:
- Get current day's tape. They are located on the help desk in the IT building
- Go to the IT server room. Any of the IT staff have a key to this room.
- Go to the server rack that contains the Innovative server. Bob Chyka, Chris McDermott, or Iran Albuez can show you which one this is. If they are not available to show you which one you can locate it with the help of the IT staff. Tell them it is: in the last rack on the left at about eye level height. It is a silver Sun server. It is the only Sun server in any of the racks. It is the only silver server in that rack. The door to the rack is not locked but there is a handle on the right side of the front that needs to be pulled up and rotated to open the rack door.
- Eject the tape from the previous day. The tape drive is in the front of the server, it is the small rectangular door on the left of the front of the server with a little lip on it, it has the letters DAT 72 on the door to the tape drive. The eject button is beneath the tape drive door, it is a blue square button. Press it once and wait. Do not press it again if the tape does not eject immediatly, it will take a minute or two for the tape to prepare itself for ejection, a green light will flash while it is preparing to eject.
- After the tape has ejected, remove it from the tape drive and insert the new tape into the drive. Be sure to orient the new tape correctly when you insert it. Push the tape in but do not force it, the tape drive will pull the tape in once you get it in far enough. I don't think you can insert it backwards or upside down, but I have never tried, so just be careful to pay attention when inserting the tape to put it in correctly
- Close the rack door, shut off the server room light and close the door
- Next you need to initialize the tape, this is done using telnet. You can use a telnet program or the Millenium telnet program. These instructions will use the Millenium telnet program.
- Log into Millenium, click on the Go menu and select Millenium Control Bar
- In the control bar, click on Telnet (the computer icon)
- Log into Millenium (ask a librarian for the user ID and password)
- Press the following keystrokes to navigate to the backup: A - B - (enter your initials, ask a librarian for initials if you are not in the system) - U - I - F (there will be a pause here while the program starts) - I (another pause) - it will ask for a name now, just press enter to accept the name it suggests - y
- The tape will now be initialized and ready to do the unattended backup overnight, press the following keys to quit telnet: Q - Q - Q - Q - Q
