Goal 3 Develop and promote the ACRL Information Literacy Standards through a combination of library-based and collaborative instruction.
Objective 1
Promote the ACRL information literacy skills standards for freshman students, by designing and deploying an information literacy assessment that will evaluate the extent to which info lit skills are acquired within the freshman learning community courses. The results of these tests will be used to improve library and classroom based info lit instruction and student learning.
Steps:
1. Develop and implement a pilot assessment to be used in a sample of GEN 110 classes.
Action steps:
· Develop objectives to be assessed based on GEN 110 Course outline. (Summer 2009)
· Create pre and post test instruments. (Summer/Fall 2009)
· Indentify GEN Ed instructors to participate in the pilot. (Fall 2009)
· Implement (Fall 2009)
2. Interact with the Learning Communities Steering Group to determine specific information literacy objectives to be addressed within the freshman Learning Community courses.
Action steps:
· Consult ENG and GEN course outlines to determine appropriate info lit objectives to be addressed within the LCs. (Fall 2009)
· Determine means to address these outcomes within the LCs (Spring 2010)
3. Create guidelines for both library and classroom based information literacy instruction to address the established info lit objectives. (Summer 2010)
1. Means of Evaluation
Pre-test and post-test administered in the GEN 110 course.
2. Success Target
· Establish a baseline of student information literacy skills for freshmen.
· Communicate info lit objectives and their role within the freshman LC courses.
· Evaluate the retention and application of information literacy skills that are taught within the freshman Learning Community courses.
· Use this data to improve both classroom and library-based information literacy instruction within the freshmen Learning Community courses.

Objective 2
Propose and implement an online tutorial, with assessment component, to be used in the ALP program and integrate the instrument within BBVista. This effort will accomplish three tasks:
· Reinforce info lit instruction efforts
· Generate assessment data
· Allow for online instruction in case of an extended emergency closure of the institution.
Action steps
· Develop proposal for Barbara Koresch that details the desired course and format of the tutorial and assessment (August 2009)
· Determine the objectives and skills to be addressed. (September 2009)
· Develop assessment instrument (Fall 2009)
· Create tutorial (Fall 2009)
Success Target
Improve student retention of information literacy objectives that are addressed within the ALP program.
Means of evaluation
Pre and post test that is integrated within the tutorial.

Objective 3
Evaluate opportunities to refine info lit instruction within the capstone GEN 410 and GEN 411 courses, and develop instructional strategies to address the higher-order skills required within these courses.
Action Steps
· Consult course outlines and meet with select instructors to determine the perceived student needs in these courses (Fall 2009)
· Examine existing data such as bibliography samples collected in fall of 2009. (Fall 2009)
· Determine appropriate objectives to be consistently addressed with Capstone info lit sessions. (Fall 2009)
· Determine a means of assessment. Fall 2009/Spring 2010
· Implement pilot (Spring 2010)
Success Targets
· Establish a base-line of info lit skills possessed by Medaille seniors.
· Determine most appropriate objectives for the Capstone courses.
· Establish instructional strategies and guidelines to effectively address those objectives.
· Continue the assessment loop to improve info lit efforts in GEN 410 and GEN 411.
Means of evaluation
· Feedback from Capstone instructors
· Evaluation of key elements of the research done (Ex. Bibliographies)
· Further assessment to be determined based on preliminary steps.

Objective 4
Augment the library-based info lit instruction within the graduate education programs by establishing classroom presentations with select instructors.
Action steps
· Identify objectives that are not being met with the ERIC tutorial (Fall 2009)
· Identify best courses to address those objectives (Fall 2009)
· Contact a set of instructors to propose the classroom based instruction (Fall 2009)
· Develop lessons to address specific info lit objectives (Fall 2009)
· Implement (Fall 2009, Spring 2009)
Success Target
· Establish an appropriate lesson that will introduce education students the resources and services available through the Medaille Library, Amherst branch.
· Garner participation from at least 2 teaching faculty to implement the lesson.
· Wider use of the Amherst Campus library.
· Establishing a basis on which further instruction and assessment efforts can be built.
Means of evaluation
· Statistics on participation. Classes taught, students served, etc.
· Survey of students to gage effectiveness of the lessons.

Objective 5
Take stock of information literacy efforts at the Rochester campus, refine where necessary, and develop a training procedure for the anticipated new employee there
Action steps
· Consult with Kevine to determine what methods and techniques are perceived as the most effective.
· Determine how the new campus in Rochester will impact info lit efforts.
· To the extent practical align info lit efforts of Rochester with those of Amherst (serving the ALP population.)
· Explore possibility of implementing the ALP online tutorial and assessment instrument being developed in Amherst, at the Rochester campus.
· Determine objectives and instructional strategies.
· Determine appropriate method for reporting on info lit efforts at the Rochester Campus.
Success target
· Develop consistent instructional strategies to be used for info lit efforts at the Rochester campus.
· Train the new employee in these efforts.
· Monitor info lit efforts in Rochester more closely
· Develop a foundation on which assessment of student learning can be developed.
Means of evaluation
· Various methods to gain feedback from stakeholders. Interviews, surveys etc.
