Medaille College Library generally classifies materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification System, which are put into the 092 field. This is true for all materials EXCEPT the following:
Child Lit (Non fiction)
Child Lit Fic
Child Lit E (Easy Readers)
YA Fic (Young Adult)
These call numbers are put into the 099 field. Each element of the field is separated by $a, eg.
099 Child Lit Fic $a B345d
or
099 Child Lit $a 423.35 $a B345y
The call numbers are indexed by Millenium and are used when searching using a dewey or local call number search in the catalog. For this reason, changes made to the call number for label printing purposes should be done in the "view label" section of Connexion (or Shift F10).
CURRICULUM
Local numbers were also used for Curriculum (which are still arranged by Subject Area in the Buffalo library for now) but going forward all curricular will get call numbers corresponding with the following Dewey range (from the DDC 22, pp.797-807):
Elementary Education
372
.3 = Computers, science, technology, health (including nature study, environmental study, sex education, nutrition and food, etc.)
.4 = Reading
.5 = Creative and manual arts (including drawing, painting, design, modeling and sculpture, handicrafts, etc.)
.6 = Language arts (communication skills) (including grammar, speech, composition, spelling and handwriting, foreign languages
and bilingual instruction, Drama, storytelling, etc.)
.7 = Mathematics
.8 = Other studies (including Home economics, family life education, Social Studies, Religion, Physical education, Dance, Music, History and Geography, etc.)
The numbers are then cuttered by publisher (Scott Foresman, Hoghton Mifflin, etc.) with a title mark indicating the series title (Investigations, EnVision, Reading Street, etc) with additional letters added in the case of identical cutter numbers.
For sets of graded textbooks, the indication of the grade will be listed below the cutter (e.g. Gr.1, Gr.K, Gr.6, etc.) to distinguish items within an entire K-6 or K-8 program.
